MZEMO Mourns One of its Veteran Journalists, Khalid Amayreh

Mzemo staff mourned yesterday, Wednesday, the national veteran writer and journalist Khalid Amayreh (66 years old) from Dura, south of Hebron.


Sadness and sorrow pervaded social networking sites with the loss of this character, who was a wonderful, compassionate, distinguished person in meeting and distinguished in all areas of life.

 With this, MZEMO mourns the journalist Al-Amayreh, who wrote hundreds of reports and articles for a number of local and Arab newspapers for many years and used his pen to expose the continuous Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people. Thus, sending our warmest condolences to his family for the great loss.

Who is journalist Khalid Amayreh?

Khalid Amayreh is a award-winning reporter who has contributed hundreds of articles to the Al-Jazeera English website from the Occupied West Bank. Hi field includes, inter alia, strategic studies with emphasis on the Arab world, Iran after the Shah, the Arab-Israeli conflict, contemporary Islamic movements, religious Zionism, comparative religion. Shiite Islam and failure of democratization in the Arab world.

Education

Amayreh received most of My formal education in the US where he obtained two degrees in journalism, a BA from the University of Oklahoma and a Master’s degree in the same field from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. He published numerous studies and articles on a variety of subjects in both English and Arabic. He has also written five books. The title of his MA thesis in the US was “the religious Press in America and the Palestinian question from 1967-1983.

Amayreh was born in Dura, near Hebron on February 9, 1957, and died on Wednesday, July 12, 2023, at the age of 66. The cause of his death was after suffering a heart attack, and then he passed away, surrendering his soul to the one who created it, and at peace with loved ones, neighbors, and colleagues.

 Amayreh appeared in his defence of the issues of his homeland, Palestine, and his nation in different languages, highlighting the justice of the cause and the injustice that the Palestinian people suffer under the Israeli occupation.

 The journalist, Amayreh, holds a master’s degree in media from the United States of America and worked for years as a lecturer at Hebron University.

 He is considered one of the most prominent Palestinian journalists who worked for foreign media and addressed the world in English.

He has been described as one of the best English-speaking Arab journalists ever. Amayreh wrote more than a thousand articles in various publications and internet sites around the world

 Among the media that Al-Amayreh worked with were the Al-Ahram weekly newspaper, Al-Jazeera Net in English, the English version of the Palestinian Information Center and Middle East Monitor , middle east mintor and Mondoweiss.

 Amayreh is the author of several books, including “Refutation of Western Myths and Misconceptions about Islam and the Palestinian question (Arabic, 1988)”, and “Living Under the Israeli Occupation, (Arabic, 2007).” , My Story with the Shiites, and other books. He translated into English a voluminous book titled: Atlas of Palestinian rural heritage” . He speaks Arabic, English, Hebrew and Farsi. He loves poetry especially pre-Islamic poetry.

He has translated many books, studies and research into English for research centres and international institutions.

 For many years, the occupation authorities prevented Al-Amayreh from leaving the West Bank. He had been harassed on several occasions by the PA beginning in January 2012. The purpose of the continuous harassment is not totally clear, but it might have something to do with the PA’s declared hostility against Hamas and any of its sympathizers.
