Gaza: Israel’s 2021 Aggression

Last year May 2021 Israel started its aggression on Palestinians in occupied Jerusalem, which has led to aggression on Gaza, during which Gaza was attacked for 11 days until a ceasefire came into effect on 21 May.

Israel’s May 2021 aggression on Gaza was its fourth military aggression on the besieged Gaza in 16 years since 2007, resulting in a humanitarian crisis. Weeks of the offensive by Israeli polices and settlers against Palestinians in Jerusalem especially in the Al-Aqsa Mosque preceded the aggression on Gaza.

Israeli forces were allowed, a month prior to the Gaza aggression, to expel Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in Jerusalem. United Nations warned that expulsions of families from Shike Jarrah could be equated with war crimes.

Palestinians started a widespread protest across the Palestinian territory and inside Israel. The protests were brutally suppressed by Israeli forces, in addition to storms on Al-Aqsa Mosque during Ramadan. More than 100 Palestinians were injured due to the Israeli forces firing at Palestinians at Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The UN Humanitarian Affairs office in the occupied Palestinian territories (OCHA) announced that Israeli forces wounded more than 1,000 Palestinians in Jerusalem. The real number of injuries, however, is thought to be more than this number.

Israel followed up its aggression on Palestinians in Jerusalem with full military aggression on Gaza. Israel said that the war was a response to rockets fired at Israel by the Palestinian movement, Hamas.

Israel started huge aggression on Gaza. More than 253 Palestinians were killed, including 66 children and 35 women, after 11 days of shelling Gaza. More than 2000 Palestinian were injured and tens of thousands fled their homes.

Israel demolished the 13-story Al-Jalaa Tower which includes news agencies, including the Associated Press. Human Rights Watch said that “Israeli forces carried out bombs in Gaza that devastated full families without any military target.

Hamas put its conditions for a ceasefire saying: “First, Israeli forces have to stop attacks into the Al-Aqsa mosque. second, Israel has to stop the expulsion of the Palestinian families in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood. These conditions are in accordance with international law.
