The Geneva-based Euro-Med Monitor said utter condemnation for the killing of Palestinian Al-Jazeera correspondent, Shireen Abu Akleh, who was killed Wednesday morning during the Israeli forces’ incursion on Jenin camp, northern West Bank.
Shireen Abu Akleh, 50 years, was murdered by a live bullet in the head during her fieldwork, furthermore, she was wearing a press vest that clearly distinguished her as Journalist.
Euro-Med Monitor’s initial investigations refer to Abu Akleh was killed by an Israeli bullet that hit her in her head, especially below the ear, the only area unprotected by the press helmet.
Witnesses affirm that at about 6 AM, a vehicle carrying journalists arrived at a roundabout in Jenin camp to cover the Israeli army’s storming. Israeli forces were deployed, and Israeli snipers climbed onto the roofs of houses.
According to an eyewitness., Journalist Abu Akleh got out of the car and took many steps before the “Israeli snipers shot her with a live bullet in her head, below the ear, especially in the only area not covered by the helmet.
Journalist Ali Smoudi was also hit with a bullet in his back and was taken to the hospital, he was in moderate condition.
Journalist Mujahid Al-Saadi, who witnessed the incident, said: ” I gathered with my fellow journalists, not far from a group of Israeli forces soldiers, and we were wearing press vests. I advanced a little to show ourselves, there was a shooting, so we took a wall as a cover, the shooting didn’t stop, and I noticed that Shireen was shot in her head. I was behind the wall, and she was taking cover on the other side. Our colleague Ali was wounded but he was able to quickly escape from the Israeli sniper’s range.
The Israeli forces said that it started investigating the incident and looking into the possibility that the journalist was hit by the Palestinian gunmen,” although eyewitnesses said that there was no exchange of fire with Palestinian gunmen at the time the Israeli snipers opened fire on journalists.
