Israel’s Iron Dome: how does it work and how effective is it?

The Iron Dome (Israeli missile shield) system intercepted 850 of the 1,000 rockets launched from Gaza while 200 managed to cause damages, according to the Israeli army.

Since when Israel has Iron Dome?

In April 2010, Israel’s state-of-the-art Defense Systems Limited company Rafael unveiled the “the Iron Dome” that could intercept short-range Katyusha rockets, many of which were fired at Israel by Lebanon’s Hezbollah during the 2006 war.

The Iron Dome system was deployed in the summer of 2011 near the Gaza Strip from which Hamas fired dozens of Katyusha rockets at Israel

Other batteries were subsequently deployed, especially near the cities of Ashkelon and Ashdod, south of Tel Aviv and near the city of Netivot, 20 kilometers from the Gaza border.

How did Palestinians penetrate the dome?

The dome, which Israeli officials say has an interception rate of 90 percent, has already spared Israel heavy casualties.

But Israeli analysts said that “intelligence sources had been warning for some time” that Palestinian Revolutionaries has so dramatically improved its weapons that it could “penetrate the Iron Dome shield…”

“If Hamas has more long-range rockets, it could affect Israel’s plans for this round of violence, especially the question of how long it wants it to last,” Yuna Jeremy Pope said, Jerusalem Post Intelligence analyst
