Employer-Employee Relationship in Islam

We have heard stories of housemaids working without rest until after midnight and rising early with the sun, or those working for months on end without pay; their wages being delayed from them. One girl unintentionally broke a rich vase and was ordered to return the money to the family for the vase; which was like half her monthly salary. Worse still, we read unexpected reports of domestic workers cruelly beaten by their employers.

Is that how Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) wont to deal his domestic help? Did he ever punish (physically or another way) any of his servants for creating a mistake? What does Islam say about the rights of domestic workers?

We explain that Wages are an earned right, not a charity. During a well-documented hadith, the Prophet (PBUH) had stated, “Pay the worker his dues before his sweat has dried up”.

It addresses the proper dues of these within the employment of others and maintains the prompt payment of all dues to the worker upon the end of his or her duties.

• Instructions on the way to treat or deal with servants, workers, and help:

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated, “They (servants) are just your brothers. Allah has put them in your care. So whoever emphasizes a brother under his care, let him eat him from what he eats himself, dress him with what he clothes himself. Let him not overburden him thereupon which he cannot bear. And if he burdens him, then let him lend him a hand. “This Hadith applies also to female servants in fact.

One guide, Abu Dharr, upon learning the Prophet’s words, nevermore annoyed or spoke firmly to a slave or servant. He was seen walking within the markets together with his servant, and therefore the servant boy was wearing the precise same ornament on his clothes that Abu Dharr himself was wearing.

Abu Dharr treated the servant as he could treat his own kids. Sympathy is inspired in Islam.

As for delaying wages, which isn’t unusual today, that’s an injustice and is impermissible in Islam.

So “Pay the laborer his wages before his sweat dries,” Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said.

Is that permissible? (For example)The owner of the company pays zakaah but he delays payment of salaries to employees by three months.

It is not permitted to late payment of salaries to employees beyond the time once they are due, which is when the work is finished or at the top of the agreed-upon period. If the agreement or covenant is that the salary is paid monthly, then it necessity be paid to the worker at the top of every month; delaying it with no excuse is considered unfair and unjust. Allah states (explanation of the meaning):

“Then if they provide suck to the youngsters for you, give them their due payment” [Al-Talaaq 65:6]

So Allah ordered that they perform their payment as soon because the work is finished.

The company owner’s delay in paying the salaries is wrongdoing which makes his honor and punishment permitted because the messenger said: “Withholding of payment by an upscale man is wrongdoing”. Narrated by al-Bukhaari (2400) and Muslim (1564).

• How did the prophet (peace be upon him) affect Anas bin Malik?

The Messenger’s wife, Aisha, said, “The Prophet of Allah, (peace and blessings be upon him), never struck a lady or a toddler or a housemaid.” (Sahih Muslim)

Anas bin Malik was a youthful boy when he began serving and working within the Prophet’s household. He worked for the Messenger (PBUH) for ten years, and not once did the Prophet reprimand or maybe strike him.

Anas said: “I served the Messenger reception and on trips. By Allah, he never said to me for love or money which I did: ‘Why have you ever done this?’ or for love or money which I didn’t do: ‘Why have you not done this?’” (Sahih Bukhari and Muslim)

  • Previously, a person came to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and inquired, “O Prophet of Allah! To what degree should we forgive the mistakes and faults of our servants?”

The Prophet (PBUH) stayed silent and when the person reduplicated the inquiry for the third time, the Prophet answered, “Seventy times each day.” (Al-Tirmidhi)

Imagine that, only after the 70th mistake that the servant or housemaid makes at some point could we lose our patience.

The Prophet was so soulful and caring towards Anas that he wont to visit Anas’s mother and aunt and participate in a meal with them. Anas’s mother asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) to form a prayer for her son. So, the Prophet (peace be upon him) prayed Allah to bless Anas and gives him wealth and youngsters. The Prophet’s prayer was responded to. Later in his life, Anas obtained wealth, had children and grandchildren, and have become a person of data, transferring 2,000 sayings of Prophet
