Performative Activism during the “Black lives matter” Movement

Published

on

The black lives matter movement is used to make another change, but this time not in the lives of the innocents, but to fill the pockets with greed. Brands, media personalities, and social influencers amidst the black lives matter movement are taking advantage of this slogan superficially, just to increase their capital, and gain attention. This way, when they will use the slogan, more people will show affiliation with them. Social activism is on the go where every brand loyalty is capturing the market. They use the label “Black lives Matter” superficially just as an excuse for more sales.

Performative activism is a derogatory terminology for superficial or fake activism based on personal interest. This activism spreads just for the sake of increasing social capital rather than having true intentions for a particular issue.

History of black killing

The history of black people dates back along. Killings for the last couple of decades is an excuse to murder innocent people for the color of their skin. In similar incidents, innocent lives have been murdered not only in America but all around the world.

Social Media- A tool of Performative activism

Looking at the history of this racist killing, people believe it needs to end now. Because of the internet and technology the world has shrunken into a global village. The social media platform in this globalized has made the George Floyd video viral. Now the whole world stood up against the killing of a black man to campaign the slogan black lives matter.

This is the time when Performative activism has again begun; social media spreads fake activism under the label of this slogan, capturing people’s affiliation, loyalty, and brand increasing sales. Again we see brands superficially claiming they support the “black lives movement” because it is now an internet hype, social media hot topic, and a viral movement.

Brands involved in Performative Activism

There are a couple of brands all over the world as the top-notch corporate centers of the world. These brands try to play tricks with the movement called black lives matter. These brands try to show the world that they are supporting the black lives movement, but they are profiting themselves by gaining their interests in different political and social ways.

People can easily deny this fact, but the reality is that these corporate brands are taking their interests by doing different things and favoring black lives matter. This altogether is a new kind of Performative activism.

American communities and Performative activism

As we all are well aware the death of a black man George Floyd led to the foundation of the black lives matter movement. There is a question. Has the movement only been taken by the black people living in America or worldwide? Due to the provocative response by people around the world, the black lives matter movement is on the go, but this movement cannot bring justice to all the black communities of the world unless we take part in it.

This again is another loophole in the name of Performative activism. Why does America have this self-driven movement? Because people are in outrage, no official statements, legislator actions, or cultural stereotype mitigation is anywhere visible. All we see is just play cards and slogans.

Perhaps, silence is a way to bring out more views of the world? or to create empathy as a base to build more brand capital? There are some serious steps needed to ensure that there will be no performative activism underneath this agenda.

Transnational solidarity on black lives matter

Social media has brought a heavy impact on this movement and it is said that it has brought transnational solidarity in some ways. Transnational solidarity must be improved in many ways because there are a lot of things that need to be improved in terms of social impact on society of a particular cause in a specific frame of time.

We know that when this incident took place the whole social media took this as social outrage and brought several things down. It had some sort of advantage as it created a spirit among people but there should be a lack of foresight in this whole scenario that people did several things in haste. This haste is taken as a social advantage that brands and social personalities gained from people using that slogan. If the governing bodies deal with the protest in the right way, it will lead to positive impacts in America and around the whole world.

The much-needed change

Black lives matter is an important movement that needs to be addressed on every platform in the United States as well as in different parts of the world. In all those places where brutality is based on color, people need to address why black lives matter instead of posting on social media and creating hashtags for this slogan. All the white big bodies that are trying to support black lives matter on social media should take a big step and try to stop the killings based on the color of their skin.

A similar response in every region

Black lives matter gets viral and it makes the world a very queer place. In America, people are now aware of the fact that why black lives matter like every other white person. There is a contradictory response from black people all around the world, except in the US stating different facts. These people are saying that black people demand justice not only in America but all over the world. There are many examples of such brutal attacks like George Floyd in different countries that never went viral like this.

Final Words

True are those people who are trying to prove that they stand with black people and should take the next step to demonstrate the fact that they meant what they said. Rest all are under Performative activism taking advantage of movement for their social gain. The government should play an integral role in bringing justice to these people and create some reforms instead of promoting such performative activism in the name of black lives matter.
